    Juventutis Domus

Following the example of Ramon Perellos, wealthy families from Valletta and Cottonera built their summer villas along St. Gregory's pilgrimage street. One of the prominent persons to build his summer residence here was Bishop Ferdinand Mattei, the first Maltese cleric to be appointed Bishop of Malta after the coming of the British. The British, rightly enough, insisted with the ecclesiastical authorities in Rome, that the Bishop of Malta should be a Maltese, whereas in the time of the Knights, almost invariably he used to be a foreigner. Nowadays this important building is used as a Youth Club. Hence the appellation, Juventutes Domus. In this youth club there is also a theatre and a chapel dedicated to the Holy Family
