Żejt iż-Żejtun | October 2026

INFORMATION

Żejt iż-Żejtun is an annual event organised by the Żejtun Local Council, aimed at celebrating the olive-picking season and the pressing of olive for olive oil. Żejtun takes its name from the Sicilian Arabic for "olive" (zaytun), reflecting how the production and cultivation of olives was an important local industry by the 7th century.

The event usually spans over 2 days, starting on Saturday evening with the BANDU (Banns or Proclamation) announcing the event. A defilee of village floks and farmers carry the olive harvest on carts for pressing, then parade along the streets of Żejtun. Traditional music is also provided by drummers and flag bearers in medieval costumes, together with folk singers and dancers that celebrate a bountiful harvest. Exhibitions of agricultural tools and products as well as folk art decks the village in traditional attire, coming alive in a celebration of colour, music, movement and food. Pride of place is of course given to olive trees, and olive trees and associated products also tend to be on sale. Maltese bread, dressed in freshly pressed olive oil, is also distributed for free tasting.

The crypt of the Parish Church of St. Catherine is usually open for public viewing, as well as the Church belfries. On Sunday morning, the Parish organises the traditional blessing of pets, horses, and cattle. This takes place after the planting of trees by children who would have just received their Confirmation.

This year, Żejt iż-Żejtun will take place on Saturday the 24th of October 2026 (evening) and on Sunday the 25th of October 2026 (morning). Those wishing to participate are kindly requested to contact us on 2166 3866 from the 25th of June 2026.
