Holy Week in Żejtun | Easter
INFORMATION
Żejtun is well-known for its rich traditions and strong faith that characterize it during the days of Holy Week. This year, anyone planning to visit Żejtun will have an invaluable tool at their disposal, thanks to the launch of a new website: www.holyweekinzejtun.com.
This portal is the result of a collaboration between Brian Scicluna, a Good Friday enthusiast, and the Culture Sub-Committee within the Żejtun Local Council, led by Councillor Anton Aquilina. The site aims to serve as a reference point, bringing together in one place everything happening in Żejtun during Holy Week, offering a more in-depth and organized experience for both residents and the many visitors.
The site is designed to be a detailed digital guide where one can find full information about the famous Good Friday procession, including its route as well as historical and artistic information about each statue that takes part in the procession. In addition to the procession, visitors can access a full calendar of exhibitions and pageants held in various locations around the streets of Żejtun. The site also covers Easter celebrations and the unique tradition of St. Gregory, along with a literature section featuring poems and writings that add a cultural and spiritual element.
One can also find all the religious functions taking place during Holy Week, including details not only about functions commonly held in towns and villages across Malta, but also unique events such as the youth Via Sagra and the Tenebrae service held on 'L-Erbgħa tat-Tniebri'. The site also presents unique information about other traditions linked to Holy Week in Żejtun, such as the chocolate known as “Idionia,” which is very popular among Good Friday enthusiasts.
One of the most innovative features of this portal is dedicated to the 'Seba' Visti'. Żejtun has the privilege of having several churches and chapels that open their doors on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. The site offers a planned walking route that passes through all the open churches, where at each stop visitors can find historical information about the building as well as the prayers to be recited during each visit. This makes it easier for individuals to carry out the visits in a devout and informed manner while also appreciating the locality’s historical heritage.
In an increasingly digital world, this site effectively brings together the past and the present. Instead of relying on printed materials, visitors can access everything from their smartphone. If you are planning to visit Żejtun during these holy days, be sure to use this site so you don’t miss out on the unique atmosphere that this locality has to offer.
